Stalaggh/Gulaggh – rock band

s1

Stalaggh, later to be re-named Gulaggh, are a musical collective with their foundations in the metal scene but which soon evolved to be a far more avant-garde unit incorporating disturbing naturalistic sounds in their music. The NME described them as ‘the most extreme (and un-listenable) band ever’.

With a name immediately designed to shock and unsettle (a combination of ‘Stalag’, the word for a Nazi concentration camp and the letters ‘g’ and ‘h’, standing for ‘global holocaust’), Stalaggh were formed by members of the extreme ends of the Dutch and Belgian metal and ambient music scenes.

s2
The real intrigue around the band is on their numerous vocalists, many said to have been patients at an asylum that one of the band members worked at, one of whom had become a resident after killing his mother by stabbing her thirty times. A later event allegedly saw another murder committed by a patient, this time a fellow patient, the sounds recorded for use on their album. A band member explained:

“The reasoning for recording the mental patients is because the band really wanted the hatred and painful emotions to be REAL and truly felt. Also we wanted to recreate the situation of the Stalag concentration camps in sound. The next recording was the vocals session which took place in the chapel of an old monastery that was no longer in use. The acoustics and atmosphere of that chapel were perfect for recording the howls and screams of the mentally insane. It was very hard to get access to that chapel, but we told the owner that we were doing this as a kind of scream therapy for the mental patients and finally he gave us permission.”

s3
Their first, self-titled release in 2001 hinted at the mayhem to come but it was their full-length works which really caused upset and alarm. The trivialities of melody are dispensed with, the unearthly screams and groans backed with throaty white-noise and atomic blasts. It’s difficult to come to a decision as to what kind of mood you’d need to be in to put it on to listen to. Between 2004 and 2008, four albums appeared each equally harrowing, none of them supported by live shows or any further indication as to those involved.

g2
They are, however, not without their fans, one of whom carved their name into his chest so deeply that he only narrowly avoided death through blood-loss. In defence of their use of mental patients, the band asserts that all involved gave their written permission and that none of the participants were mentally deficient, ‘only’ suffering from conditions such as schizophrenia and psychosis, the ultimate aim being to give the listener an idea of what is going on in their heads and to transform pain and fear into sound.

g1
Their following project, Gulaggh, again obsessing with concentration camps, this time the Russian Gulags, incorporated classical instrumentation, violins, cellos and saxophones, inevitably attacked rather than played in a conventional manner. If anything, it’s even more unsettling than the previous incarnation’s music, with the increased atmosphere evoking genuinely Hellish visions. Once the three album project is completed, the band has announced there will be no future releases and they will cease to exist.

Encyclopedia Metallum states that the ‘band describes their music as “death metal” according to their ideological background, but the music is black/thrash metal.’ The band’s lyrics focus on Satanism, Anti-Judeo-Christianity and blasphemy within a Christian context.

Kiss Me Quick! is a 1964 American sci-fi horror nudie cutie movie directed by Peter Perry (as Seymour Tuchus) and produced by Harry Novak. The film was originally titled Dr Breedlove or Dr Breedlove or How I Stopped Worrying and Love to exploit the title of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove. It was retitled to exploit Billy Wilder’s Kiss Me, Stupid. The highlight of the movie involves a dance number in which three of Breedlove’s captive women gyrate to garage rock.

He’s also introduced to Frankie Stein, Dracula and a strange Mummy…

Reviews:

‘ … as a monument to the moment when filmmakers found the chutzpah to challenge the wildly unconstitutional claims that kept movies in the decency Dark Ages for several decades, Harry Novak’s horror hi-jinx were instrumental in paving the way for greater cinematic openness. In essence, he moved nudity out of the camp and into the realm of ordinary comedy. As entertaining as Kiss Me Quick remains, its industry significance cannot be understated. Indeed, it was monsters that helped make nakedness a non-issue for the grindhouse gang.’ Bill Gibron, Pop Matters

Frankie-Stein-Kiss-Me-Quick-1964

‘ … there is no denying the high amount of entertainment value present. The surf punk garage band instrumental music, for one thing, is first rate … All of the women are luscious, in their bouffants and spit curls, breasts thankfully free of major surgical enhancement and liberated to move like they have a mind of their own. And while the overall acting is from the “borrow someone else’s shtick” school of mimicry (Dr. Breedlove sounds like a thick tongued Bela Lugosi), you can tell the cast is having a wonderful time. This is a non-politically correct monster mash celebration of women as full blown sexual objects, a jeer at the tameness of the times and a leering look and lampooning of lust.’ DVD Verdict

Plot teaser:

A down and out rock’n’roll band, The Winners, who will do anything for a record deal. Their luck suddenly changes when Jennifer the bass player, disappears one night with a vampire and emerges with a sexually charged charisma that drives the audiences wild. As the band members succumb, one by one, to blood lust, their “gimmick” launches them into the limelight…

Various shots in the movie are meant to evoke classic rock album covers. Some examples: A shot of the band crossing the street is an homage to The Beatles “Abbey Road.” Another shot of the band using a Union Jack flag as a blanket is based on The Who’s “The Kids Are Alright.” In the border station, the first shot is a nod to Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In The USA”.

Reviews:

“Stefaniuk keeps the energy level high and wisely blends in music liberally with the vampire action. Suck is a rock movie at its heart and Stefaniuk and crew embrace this fact; the bass player’s metal-infused transformation sequence is a stand-out. The story isn’t held back either, as the progression from “bizarre rock band underdog movie” to full-on “vampire hunting spoof” moves along nicely and features some satisfying beats. Staking a vamp with an electric guitar? Genius.” DVD Verdict

suck iggy

Suck is a movie that doesn’t really have any surprises, take one look at the fangs on the poster and read the corny title and you’ll know pretty much what you are in store for. But that doesn’t mean Suck isn’t actually quite funny and weirdly appealing despite its low-budget origins.” Eye For Film

Reviews:

“chugs out of a warbling doom line at the beginning and sets itself onto a morose but tuneful course with moody guitar chimes, dirge-loaded bass and empathetic swills from Corey Taylor … The choruses are a little too safe, but a massive and quick-stepped breakdown plus a grinding bridge thereafter keeps the song robust and hectic.” Blabbermouth.net

Lyrics:

Undo these chains my friend
I’ll show you the rage i’ve hidden
Perish the sacrament
Swallow, but nothing forgiven
You and I can’t decide which of us was taken for granted
Make amends
Some of us are destined to be outlived

Step inside, see the devil in I
Too many times, we’ve let it come to this
Step inside, see the devil in I
You’ll realize i’m not your devil anymore

Under the words of men
Something is tempting the father
Where is your will my, friend?
Insatiates never even bother
You and I, wrong or right
Traded a lie for the leverage
In between the lens in light
You’re not what you seem

Step inside, see the devil in I
Too many times, we’ve let it come to this
Step inside, see the devil in I
You’ll realize i’m not your devil
I’m not your devil anymore
Your station is abandoned
Fool you ’cause I know what you’ve done
Sensation depravation
You should’ve burned when you turned on everyone

‘Billy’s back from the dead with a message from Hell!’

Rocktober Blood is a 1984 American slasher horror film written, produced and directed by Fred and Beverly Sebastian (Gator Bait). It stars Tray Loren, Donna Scoggins, Cana Cockrell, and features the band Sorcery as actors and on the soundtrack.

On 1 February 2017, the Sebastians made Rocktober Blood available for free to view on YouTube.

“Billy Eye Harper, legendary rock superstar, is dead and buried, but not forgotten. His music lives on. His lover and lead singer has now taken over the band. Now they are out on the road and ready for the ultimate performance! But there is a problem… Billy’s back from the grave and he wants to put a stop to the music the bloody way that Billy knows best!”

Reviews:

“While lacking the qualities necessary in making what one would consider a good movie, Rocktober Blood is a thoroughly enjoyable entry into the heavy metal horror sub-genre and certainly a must see for anyone who enjoys a little ‘80s cheese.” Chuck Norris Ate My Baby

“Not only is Rocktober Blood a fun little underrated gem, it also features one of the best soundtracks around […] Just for the ending and the soundtrack alone, this one surpasses so many others in this su-genre. Plus there’s naked and half-naked beauties, awesome band scenes, cool deaths and more.” Ronnie Angel, Slashed Dreams: The Ultimate Guide to Slasher Films

Buy: Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.ca

“Some of the photography is impressive, especially in the rock concert and lakeside scenes, but technically that’s about all that there is of note. The movie has some of the worst and most laughably amateur actors that I have ever seen […] Another issue is the fact that the story is also quite jumbled, confused and poorly scripted.” Luisito Joaquin Gonzalez, A Slash Above…

“For the most part Rocktober Blood is a trashy delight; with touches such as the killer holding his breath under the water in a Jacuzzi to snag a victim, it’s clearly not aiming to be a believable thriller.” J.A. Kerswell, Teenage Wasteland: The Slasher Movie Uncut

Buy: Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.com | Amazon.ca

“There is a time capsule element here that helps make things somewhat bearable. The music (by Sorcery, the band from Stunt Rock) is really cheesy, and the fashions are pretty funny too. If that doesn’t tickle your ‘80s nostalgia bone, I’m sure you’ll get a kick out of the long aerobicizing scenes.” Micth Lovell, The Video Vacuum

“A strange film, really quite boring unless you happen to be a fan of ‘metalsploitation’, with a woefully un-frightening killer, too few characters, actors who murmur their lines, and no real sense of cohesion or creativity.” Hudson Lee, Vegan Voorhees

‘You can’t keep a good band down’

Hard Rock Zombies is a 1985 American comedy horror feature film directed by Krishna Shah from a screenplay co-written with David Allen Ball. The movie stars E.J. Curse, Geno Andrews, Sam Mann, Mick McMains, Lisa Toothman, Jennifer Coe, Ted Wells, and Jack Bliesener.

In the small town of Grand Guignol, four members of a rock band are electrocuted to death by a bizarre woman and her strange family. Knowing that their fans are dying to see them, none of the band members is about to let a stupid thing like death stop them from putting on their concert, so they rise from the grave and give the greatest concert of their lives…

Reviews:

” …the film never takes itself very seriously, which is good, because there’s nothing about it that anyone could ever take seriously. But there’s no relevant theme to the film at all, because Shah jumps all over the place; the town of Grand Guignol (very subtle) has werewolves and Nazis and Hitler and zombies and demons, all at once, and it’s so oddball and wacky that it’s tough to concentrate on the real plot of the story.” Ryne Barber, Horror News

“Its title only describes a small portion of the plot, a bit of a misdirection play that belies the madness within. Though at times it fits within the hard rock horror cycle, to find an analogue for Hard Rock Zombies requires you to look one or more decades past its 1985 release, when its aesthetic pastiche and non-sequitur humor would fully come into vogue.” David Carter, Not Coming to a Theater Near You

” …like an extended drum solo, there’s lots of unnecessary padding. But it’s not just filler with no killer. It’s an entertaining mess which culminates in all the zombified characters (pretty much everyone in the film) dancing and rocking out together. It’s also a nice remnant of an era when people took themselves just a little less seriously and amps went all the way up to 11.” Really Awful Movies

“Effectively a feature-length music video, it is entirely possible that Hard Rock Zombies could be held up as a triumph in non-sequential art, except that most of it will just leave you wondering what the hell is going on. We’d never be so irresponsible as to suggest that this film is best enjoyed under the influence, but it might help. A historical curiosity only, when people make fun of the 1980s, it is because of films like this.” Richard Gray, The Reel Bits

“The height of hilarity here are a town called Grand Guignol (Ho, ho), a cute Psycho shower scene gag, and a Satanic musical finale (is that the dreaded ‘Tri-tone’ being played?) that is kinda amusing but not as much as it should be […] with the Metal vs. Morality debate stuff being especially pointless here. I get what it’s a reference to but it takes forever for it to be even remotely integrated into the main plot.” Ryan McDonald, Shameless Self Expression

“The sort of film where someone asks a severed head “Omigawd! Are you all right?” the music (by Paul Sabu) might have redeemed it, but every time they break for a song it’s soft rock at best and miles from grit yer teeth metal. A complete mess, but bizarre enough to lodge itself in the unsuspecting mind.” Graeme Clark, The Spinning Image

” …one of those movies that’s so bad it’s good… or almost good in this particular case, because it has a fatal flaw. It doesn’t take itself seriously, and the creators obviously knew they were making an incredibly goofy movie (with a werewolf grandma, midgets, zombies, and Hitler, how could they not?), and this sense of fun greatly helps the movie along.” Steve Miller, Terror Titans

Hard Rock Zombies is a blatantly stupid movie that is so cheesy that it’s hard to actually enjoy. At least with Troma movies, there’s a tongue in cheek campiness that makes them fun, but here the jokes are so desperate that they make Troma seem dignified. I mean you know you’re in trouble when the main villain is revealed to be Adolf Hitler.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

“The plot is slight and the thrills driven by adolescent concerns, but the variations on the usual zombie motifs are more innovative than in most of the camp zombie flicks to follow over the next decade. Strange moments abound, such as a zombie dwarf who, through the course of the movie, devours himself entirely go nothingness.” Peter Dendle, The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia, McFarland

13th Floor Vendetta – gothic rock song by The Damned

13th Floor Vendetta is a song by British punk/goth/psychedelic band The Damned that originally appeared on their ‘The Black Album’ (1980).

The track highlighted Dave Vanian’s growing song-writing talent – although all of the band are credited – and their willingness to experiment with disorientating fade in/fade outs, echoey sounds and deliriously off-kilter keyboard notes, all backed by a growling bass-line provided by Paul Gray.

With reference to “the organ plays ’till midnight on Maldine Square tonight”, the lyrics are influenced by the film The Abominable Dr. Phibes but are clearly about a master/slave relationship.

‘The Black Album’ was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales, and was produced by The Damned themselves (as The Kings of Reverb).

Lyrics:

The organ plays ’till midnight on Maldine Square tonight
The dancer’s dance with a fever and delight
His brow is tense but his hands never shake
Revenge has come sweetly and death is his mate
The organ plays ’till midnight note perfect like clockwork
Perfect precise and a slave to the master’s demands
Two souls locked together for all eternity
Soon to be one our work is nearly over
But who is the victim?
And who is the innocent?
The organ plays ’till midnight note perfect like clockwork
Perfect precise and a slave to the master’s demands

Black Roses – Canada/USA, 1988

‘Turn up the volume, turn down the lights, but don’t watch it alone!’

Black Roses is a 1988 Canadian-American supernatural horror feature film co-produced and directed by John Fasano (The Jitters; Rock ‘n’ Roll Nightmare) from a screenplay by Cindy Cirile [as Cindy Sorrell]. The Shapiro Glickenhaus Entertainment production stars John Martin, Ken Swofford, Julie Adams, Carla Ferrigno, Sal Viviano and Carmine Appice.

Plot:

The sleepy little town of Mill Basin is about to get more than it bargained for. The satanic heavy metal rock band Black Roses is coming through to raise hell… literally! After making a deal with the Devil himself, the band’s music demonically possesses the kids in the audience, turning them into bloodthirsty demons. The blood flows as they start killing their parents and causing chaos at their local high school…

Reviews:

“It suffers further from some of the most thoroughly incompetent camera-work I’ve ever seen, offering not a single shot that is pleasing to the eye, and many that are affronts to both narrative sense and aesthetic sensibility. The dialogue is witless from beginning to end, especially when writer Cindy Cirile is trying to make Damian sound threatening…” 1000 Misspent Hours and Counting

” …goofy 1980’s atmosphere with dozens of weird puppets, bizarre dialogue and hair metal soundtrack cuts. Don’t miss the screen debut of The Soprano‘s Vincent Pastore, who is sucked into a stereo speaker. Silly but undeniably fun to watch…” Canuxsploitation!

“It was really fun, cheesy and clever throughout, and even though it’s obviously super low-budget and and not all that well made, it’s very genial, funny and energetic. Everything about this movie is hilarious and yet awesome at the same time. It was obviously made with a lot of love both for horror films and metal music…” Cinema de Merde

“It is kind of hilarious to see the actors going for it, trying to believe they are fighting a real thing and not some lousy, low budget hand puppet. And speaking of the actors, some of the them look like they are reading their lines from a card board! To top things off, the teenagers are played by actors who are obviously not teenagers!” The Film Connoisseur

“Straightforward story, pearl necklaces, glowing demon hand, quick pace, goofy songs, four topless scenes, demon getting kicked in the demon nuts, Julie Adams, a Dawn of the Dead poster, a Slumber Party Massacre poster, demon choking on a tennis ball, two Lamborghini’s, fog machine, a Cro-Mags shirt…” Happyotter

Black Roses is cheap and silly in the best possible ways, but also remarkably professional and continually engaging […] Though the film shows very little respect for metal fans, it’s fun to see the worst nightmares come true instead of patiently explaining the virtues of heavy metal yet again!” Mike McPadden, Heavy Metal Movies

” …some of the practical effects used in Black Roses are really fun to see and that adds a lot to the experience. The story remains fairly grounded outside of the whole demonic metal band angle, so there’s not a lot of wild dialogue. There are some gems to discover, but not as many wacky lines as you might think.”  Marc Fusion

“With the goofy acting, schlocky narrative, and somewhat repetitive nature of the story up until the halfway mark, this isn’t exactly quality film [….] The ear-worm soundtrack and insanely entertaining monster sequences overshadows the film’s flaws, however.” Megan Navarro, Rare Horror

” …entertainingly dopey with lots of chintzy effects, decent enough acting (John Martin is good as the teacher hero), a sort of brutal “ashtray” moment, a surprisingly literate script at times and lots of satirical jabs at the PMRC (Tipper Gore’s music censorship group).” The Video Graveyard

‘You’ve made it through Halloween, now try surviving Christmas…’

Merry Axe-Mas is a single by metal band Ice Nine Kills from their ‘The Silver Scream’ album. The video and song are a tribute to Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984). Lead singer Spencer Charnas explained to Revolver:

Silent Night, Deadly Night is one of my all time favorite slasher flicks. In our song and video for ‘Merry Axe-Mas,’ I wanted to pay tribute to the film’s brilliant combination of sleaze, holiday cheer, absurdity and vicious gore.”

Argento – song and video by metal band Setheist

‘Argento’ is one of the tracks from the upcoming EP ‘Tre Colori’ by Polish melodic thrash metal band Setheist. The accompanying video was directed by Tomasz Jorman.

“Excitement, gasping for breath. A trickle of sweat dribbling slowly down your temple. Shifty eyes disclosing madness hidden deep inside. You don’t know what’s about to happen, how many beats of the heart you have left. The one and only thing you focus on is a glittering blade of a razor.

Elegant, black, leather gloves desperately wish to touch your body. You want to scream but you realise it’s already impossible. Suddenly you feel warmth on your throat and the touch of your fingers reveals sticky, thick liquid on it. Its colour is deep red. We are Setheist and our music will take you to the cruelly beautiful world of Italian giallo movies.”
